Major Cable Network Looking For Inventions
New prime-time show for a major cable network is looking for Inventors to showcase their creations.   The program will feature two hosts (who are experts in invention/innovation/product development) who travel around the country meeting people who are working on "the next great idea"
We're looking for inventors who have...

Mechanical Masterpieces - Does your invention have lots of cool moving parts?Inventions that can it be "tested/demonstrated" in interesting ways.  The more creative the test, the better.  Can we take it to the "mall/store/main street" and have people try it out?  Could we give it to "the target market" and have them try it out for the day? Can our hosts use it?  Obviously inventions don't all fit into this category, but the more "hands on" the product, the better.Does it aid in the transportation industry? (increase fuel efficiency, use alternative fuels? Is it an AWESOME, MUST LEARN MORE ABOUT thing?Does it feature green energy? If you product doesn't fit the above, but your invention is "just plain fun" email us!Inventors who have made major personal sacrifices in order to get their ideas off the ground are also very desirable.

Interested inventors please email me the following...

Photo of you and your producta couple paragraphs describing who you are and your general location (so we can map out our "road trip" geographically).  Describe your product / how it works, why is it better than "what's already out there" and outline any personal sacrifices you've made to make your product come to life.links or video clips of you and your product in action

Coming Up With a New Invention

What should you do first?

Have you ever wondered how people come up with new product invention?

Maybe you already have an idea or you are looking for the next million-dollar invention idea. Either way, you must do your research before you spend any money on an invention.  Patents can be expensive, so a little research will keep you from spending money unnecessarily.

Keep in mind that you do not have to have a complex or complicated idea to make money.  Most likely, your first invention will not be the million-dollar invention. But once you learn the process, inventing can be rewarding as well as lucrative. Some inventions solve problems, like my hat rack did.  There was a opportunity in the market for a hat rack that I was able to fill. Not every idea has to solve a problem, though.  Some product inventions connect with people at a specific time and space in history.

Think about some of the simple inventions that made a lot of money that make you say, why didn't I think of that!   For instance, I would like to know who thought of the "pet rock!"  How about the Chia pet - what were they thinking?  And beanie babies and Webkinz??

None of these ideas solved world hunger, but they were products that connected with people at a level that converted consumer connection to consumer sales. Who knows?  You could come up with the next pet invention or toy!

 Finding Your Inspiration

Here's a great way to get inspiration for your next great invention...

Spend some time in the aisles of a store. If you are interested in toys, then visits a toy store.
  • Ask questions
  • Study the shelves
  • See what is new, etc.
  • Talk to a manager
  • Try to find out what's hot right now
  • What would he like to see in stores
  • What are the new trends?
  • What toy companies put out the most new toys?
A trip to a store can give you information and inspiration to create the next big thing. Toy companies are great targets for inventors, because they typically do not spend a lot of money on research and development.  In other words, they may be more open and receptive to ideas from outside sources.

Every day, I locate new products on the shelves of office supply stores, toy stores, Walmart, and department stores. Check it our sometime, and see all of the new ideas being launched into these stores and get inspired to make your product next!

Stephen Keys, a fellow inventor, once noticed that basketball nerf  ball games were popular in toy stores.  They are the small backboards with the foam balls that you hang on your bedroom wall and shoot balls into it. He also noticed that all of the basketball toys had plain backboards. At that time, Michael Jordon was extremely popular; he got a bright idea to make a basketball rim using Michael Jordon as the backboard instead of the typical backboard. He licensened the product and has sold millions of them in stores like Walmart. This simple idea made millions for him.

Remember that the next time you visit a toy store. It may be worth it to spend a little time checking out the aisles!

 You've Invented Something...

Now What!?

After you have a great idea, you are probably wondering, "What I should I do next?"  Well, if you are planning on filing for patent protection for your invention, here are a few things you should know before you spend any money.

A patent allows the inventor (you) the exclusive right to stop others from making, using, and selling the invention. If anyone else tries to sell or manufacture your idea, it gives you the right to stop infringers and sue for damages and other legal remedies. However, patents can be expensive, and I teach people how to get your product sold on a budget.  Here's what you need to know.

I know you are excited about your idea, and you want to protect it before someone else thinks of it...but slow down and search things out first.

Remember that 70% of patents do not make any money. This step will help you avoid being one of those. Do a thorough search online or a formal patent search before you file for a patent. If you can find the exact invention idea with all of the same features, you probably won't be able to get a patent for it. But that does not mean that you are out of the game...

Go to www.Google.com/images and search your invention idea.

If you are inventing a new and improved widget, put "widget" in the search box, and it will bring up every image of widgets available online. Once you see the widget, you can click on the link to determine if it has the same benefits as yours. If it does, do not get discouraged...just make yours better.

You have not spent any money, and you will save yourself a lot of time by searching before spending. If all of the widgets available do the same thing, improve on it.  Add features that you would like to see on a widget or go back to the drawing board. But whatever you do, don't start spending money on an idea that is already available. When I talk about improvements, I am speaking of improvements to the function of the item - not the look or color of the item. Ask yourself, "Can I improve the function of the widget?"

Begin to brainstorm what features would be cool and new and never seen before on a widget. Think of every feature that you can to add to the functionality and purpose of the widget, and you may be on your way to making a better widget and a patentable invention!
